Cabox Aspiring Geopark is based around Elamastukwek, the Bay of Islands in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Geopark is located in a critical area of the Paleozoic Appalachian orogen, where spectacular massifs of the Bay of Islands Ophiolite were fundamental to the earliest interpretations of Paleozoic plate tectonics, and continue to inform geoscience about ocean-floor processes.

The trip will provide a broad view of the regional geology, including the Paleozoic carbonate-dominated shelf, the laterally equivalent deep-water sedimentary rocks of the Humber Arm Supergroup, arc rocks of the Little Port assemblage (Coastal Complex), ocean floor preserved in the Bay of Islands Ophiolite, and the record of Quaternary glaciation and deglaciation. The rocks were deformed both in Ordovician arc-continent collision and in the subsequent accretion of exotic terranes, and show spectacular tectonic features including refolded folds, sup-ophiolite metamorphism, and mélanges.
