What are IGCs?
• IGCs are the major global-scale congress of geologists worldwide, held every four years under the aegis of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS)
• There are over 60 active national members
of the IUGS, representing approximately 1 million geoscientists worldwide!
• IGCs bring together scientists, geological survey organizations, educators, students, industry representatives, etc., from across the globe to share research, build networks, and discuss current and future challenges in Earth Sciences
The purpose of IGCs are:
1. To encourage both fundamental and applied research globally.
2. To address global issues in geoscience: resource sustainability (e.g. critical minerals), environmental challenges (climate change, geo-hazards), geoheritage, education, equity (including gender equity).
3. To connect geological science with societal needs (disaster risk, human welfare) and to promote sharing of data/methods
